Public Theology Political and Hospitable: Engaging Neighbors
How can churches embody true neighborly love in this current political moment in our nation? We discussed mutual hospitality in immigration policy and how to challenge white Christian nationalism in church. Dr. Sophia Magallanes-Tsang, assistant professor of Old Testament at North Park Theological Seminary, and Dr. Drew J. Strait, associate professor of New Testament and Christian origins at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, led our conversation. View the conversation here.
2024 Carl G. Westerdahl Lecture
You can view the 2024 Carl G. Westerdahl Lecture, Transaction or Transformation: Racial Interests and the Gospel, presented by Dr. Glenn Bracey, assistant professor of sociology and criminology at Villanova University, here.
Reading Scripture, Being Church, and Telling Our Story as Intercultural Communities: A Faculty Colloquy
Join us on February 15 at 4:30pm in celebrating the installation of three endowed faculty chairs whose scholarly work exemplifies our seminary’s vocation to bring the best of the academy to the mission of the church: in multi-racial congregations, intercultural readings of Scripture, and building purposeful narratives. Then return on February 16 at 9:00am to get a taste of how your North Park Seminary faculty together seek to discern the past in order to move forward in our complex world, training leaders in the art of telling visionary truth so they can inspire purposeful action—for God’s glory and neighbor’s good. Humility as a Prophetic Practice: A Public Theology Series
How can Christians embody Jesus’ humility in our current cultural, political, religious, and institutional climates? Our 2023–2024 public theology series focuses on Christian humility in conversation with Dean Dennis Edwards’ forthcoming book, Humility Illuminated, and in response to the Christ hymn of Philippians 2.
- Shepherding, Reconciling, and Ministering: Humility in Pastoral Practice October 25, 2023
What is humility, and why is it necessary for pastoral practice? Leaders in congregational ministry, conflict transformation, and accessibility advocacy will discuss this misunderstood virtue, in concept and in concrete ministry practice. View the recording here.
NPTS would like to thank Lilly Endowment, Inc. for their generous support of the Public Theology Lecture Series since 2021. To view recording of past lectures presented in the Public Theology series, please visit our Public Theology Archives page.
